In October, Carina Mood delivered a keynote presentation at the FOR IN-conference arranged by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Offices in Estonia in collaboration with the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, the University of Tartu, Tartu Welcome Centre, the UNHCR Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries and the Swedish Embassy in Tallinn.
The main focus of the conference was to discuss the importance of education in integration processes at the local level and to share experiences and best practices regarding the integration of Ukrainian refugees in the Nordic-Baltic Region. Representatives from various sectors including academia, local governments, and state organizations in the Nordic-Baltic region presented their knowledge and shared key data on immigration and integration in their respective countries and organizations, which was followed by collaborative discussions.
Carina Mood presented research on integration through education, based on her and her collaborators research using CILS4EU and Swedish register data. The slides from the presentation can be found here.

Carina Mood and Jan O. Jonsson delve into the educational opportunities and achievements of youth with immigrant backgrounds in their recently published report commissioned by ESO.
Contrary to popular belief, the report finds that many children and young adults with immigrant backgrounds excel academically. The research highlights the significant impact of various factors on their educational outcomes, including the age at immigration. The researchers emphasize the need to approach policies and analysis from a perspective that recognizes the heterogeneity of this group, enabling targeted interventions to support those at the highest risk of academic difficulties.
Moreover, the report showcases the determination and high ambitions of these young individuals, who often display exceptional dedication to their studies. However, it also sheds light on the particular struggles faced by those who immigrated at a later stage in their lives, with the defined age range of 9-15 years being especially critical.
The findings call for a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and strengths of youth with immigrant backgrounds, enabling tailored interventions to maximize their educational success. Interested readers are invited to explore the full report for a deeper insight into this topic.
A presentation of the report as well as a discussion of the findings is available at SVT Forum (in Swedish). There is also a presentation of the findings aimed at a general audience available in Swedish on UR Play.
In addition to the report, we are pleased to share media coverage that has captured the attention and interest of the public. These news articles, interviews, and features provide a platform for further discussion and exploration of the findings and implications of our research.

In a new article in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health, IntegrateYouth team members Stephanie Plenty, Olivia Spiegler and Chloe Bracegirdle, together with Jörg Dollman at MZES in Germany, compare mental well-being among young adults with ethnic minority and majority background before and after the onset of the Covid pandemic in Germany. Overall, they find no signs of declines in young adults’ mental well-being at the early stage of the pandemic, and that changes were mostly similar across ethnic groups. Respondents’ mental well-being was (on average) worse when they were younger. Nevertheless, increased ethnic discrimination and health worries are serious problems among some ethnic minorities.
